Once I figured out how to walk around somewhat decently, I wanted to start exploring. I asked Carus to take me to some shops to look at clothes. Hearing about all the great clothes was one of the main reasons I wanted to try this game. So of course, that is where I wanted to go first. Before we left, he showed me how to make his Lindon house my home in case I got lost.
Preferences – World – Make my home
He also explained to me that different parts of Second Life had different ratings. G, M and A. I needed to be aware of this. For example, if I was in a G or M rated shop and found something I wanted to try on it would be inappropriate to try it on right there. That is why many shops offer demos of the items they are selling. So, you can grab Demos then go back to your home and try the demos on and see what you like, then go back and buy.
This first day he took me to two stores. One called Blueberry and the other Addams. He first went to Blueberries as he had the store Landmarked. I found out that you can search for locations in the Search section on your game and Teleport yourself there. Or if someone else is there they can offer to teleport you. I was very new though and didn’t know how to find landmarks, etc. So, he went to Blueberry and teleported me there.
I loved Blueberry when I first stepped into the store. So many fun things!!! This is when I also learned about groups and freebies. Oh my goodness freebies!!! I admit I went freebie crazy the first couple of weeks and got myself a decent beginner’s wardrobe.
Most locations/stores will have a group you can join for the location. Some are free and some charge Lindens (in game currency). The Blueberry group was free for me to join. Once you join the group some stores will have freebies you can grab. In order to get your freebies, you need to make sure your wearing the tag for that location. That is easy to do. You go to your chat window and to your contacts/groups. You find the group you want and click on it then you activate the group tag. Once you have the tag (it shows above your name) you can grab your freebies.
Blueberry had a wall of fabulous freebies!
I admit I grabbed every single freebie they had since I didn’t own anything yet. Plus, I loved all the things found at Blueberry. This first trip I looked around Blueberry. I grabbed some demos to try on but did not buy anything (I came back later and grabbed some cute things).
Then Carus took me to Addams and I joined that group and grabbed their freebies as well. Plus, they have a in store credit freebie they are giving right now. So, I have $300 in store credit to spend when I go back.
Carus and I went back home after visiting those two stores and I tried on some freebies. This is where I learned all about inventory and how to unpack my boxes and bags. Wow there is so much to this game! Luckily, I was not feeling overwhelmed as Carus was showing me and teaching me. With my purchases and freebies, I had to either add them or rez them depending on the item and unpack the item. Which placed it in my inventory. He then explained about keeping my inventory under control…which I have found can get out of control quite fast!!! I took his ideas he shared plus the suggestions on Organizing Inventory I found on The Shameless Shopper blog. I found that blog post very helpful when it came to organizing my goodies. I spent the next lil bit working on my inventory and getting a good feel of how my controls/movement worked. It was such a great first day on Second Life and I was so excited to come back and learn more.
